Roaming round Riga

by James on Apr.05, 2008, under Latvia, OE

There hasn’t been that much to see in Riga.
We have been in Riga in Latvia since yesterday. Perhaps we are a little jaded from all our travelling but it hasn’t been that fascinating.

On Thursday after we got settled in we went to a pub where a Sax player was belting out classics, some old codger convinced the women sitting on her own next to him to dance and kept requesting Wonderful World by Armstrong which did make the night quite amusing.

Friday we must have been tired from all our packing because we slept in. We quick look at the old city, Susan had then planned on finding a nice place to eat dumplings but I convinced her we needed something to make us hungry.
So at midday we joined an alternative walking tour. We were among 10 20 something’s wandering around the city following a guide (James) with a passion for Art Noveua and funny wooden buildings. James came from Ilford (just down the road from us) and was a dead ringer for our friend Adam Stone. We checked out a bizarre flea market that tourist aren’t meant to visit full of plumbing junk and car stereos. We ended at disused port area where loads of youths hang out and graffiti. Perhaps this “cultural area” was a little wasted on us.

After all of this walking Susan finally got to eat her dumplings. We when to a studenty dumpling fast food place where you pay by the weight of you bowl. Susan liked it so much at after walking the first lot off in the cold we decided to go for dumpling round 2!

Today we got up at 6am to get to the airport to fly to Moscow, however because of the serve fog our flight has been grounded for a couple hours. This obviously made my wife particularly happy. Sadly our last 4 hours in Latvia have been spent sleeping in the airport.
