Going, Going, Gone

by James on May.04, 2008, under OE, UK

Today is our last full day in the UK. We are both a little sad to be leaving but Susan is also quite worried about packing and the lack of toilets on the Inca Trail.

Saturday we travelled back to London and we visited work friends of mine and Susan’s. After that zipped into the city in time to get one of the last London Eye rides with Debbie. Susan has always wanted to do it. So she managed to get over her fear of heights to slowly glide round the enormous Ferris wheel. After getting the best hot chocolate in London (1882 close to the Shell building), we had our last Chinese in Lester Square.

Sunday was manic. We realised we had way too much stuff to fit into our packs. We also sold our car and fitted in church. So in our last day didn’t really get time to reflect.

Weather in Yorkshire

by James on Apr.16, 2008, under OE, UK

Today we have done a little Dales driving tour.
2626

Later this evening in a local pub we got talking to a couple from York. On the drive home we reflected how we have been moulded into the UK etiquette and rules of small talk.

Step 1: Begin by quickly mentioning the weather, DO NOT shake hands or make any body contact.
“Very cold and overcast out there huh?”

Step 2: Wait for response, this signals the target is accepting conversation.
“Yes, very chilly isn’t it”

Step 3: Now don’t move too quickly a weather related comment is best
“Still it’s so lovely to be inside with this fire”

Step 4: If you get an elaborated response to this (i.e more than yes) you are in and a proper conversation can begin!
“Yes, Although I’m not as close to it as I would like to be”

This is the point where you can talk about what you have been doing today and maybe ask them about where they have been walking etc. It’s also a good time to find out which second cousin etc they have in New Zealand. They will usually give the relatives name as of course we all know John who moved to Wellington a couple of years ago
;-)

However there are some golden rules to British conversation that also must be considered:

Never ask for names of the people you are speaking to.

Never ask what job a person has this should only ever be volunteered.

Forest and Bakewell

by James on Apr.14, 2008, under OE, UK

Today was the beginning of our final UK road trip (over 200 miles are planned).
2632
We are on our way to Yorkshire but decided to breakup the trip but staying the night in Nottingham. The main (possibly the only) tourist destination around is Sherwood Forest. However it’s not so much a forest as a few trees and one really old oak tree.

Still we saw it and even had time to pop into nearby Bakewell. This town, not surprisingly is home to the legendary Bakewell pudding. Two bakeries claim to be the original purveyors so it was only fair that Susan and I tried both to ensure the over 100 year old recipes we upto scratch.

Theres always something going on in London.
So far this year we have been to South Africa and Russia day.
This time to celebrate Chinese New Year the area around Leicester Square was decked out with Chinese lanterns and hourly super smokey fireworks. They also had Chinese dragons and fighting monks.

Touristy Tower Bridge

by James on Feb.09, 2008, under OE, UK

Again no postings for a while. But while the weather was nice Susan and I visited some of the London’s top stops while we were still in the UK.
We went to see the Tower Bridge which was quite interesting particularly because it was a nice clear day. There was also quite an engaging collection of post cards throughout the years including one from a French guy moaning the girls in England aren’t as pretty as those in Paris.
